Planned Breedings

March 2012

BVR Hatta
Black Self
BVR Diadem
Dove Self

For our Russian Cinnamon line...

At one point, a color mutation that cropped up in a sibling breeding between Hatta's aunt and uncle at a different rattery made me hesitant to breed him, and absolutely disqualified him from the Black Satin line he was intended for, since the mutation does not appear on Black and could hide in the line for generations. However, at 17 months, Hatta is too good not to use. His conformation is exceptional, with strong, heavy bones, good muscles, and an amazing head with very large eyes. His color is very dark, with little silvering and no rusting. His health and temperament are both exemplary. In short, he is too good not to use for color reasons. Using him with Diadem will allow us to determine with a greater degree of certainty if the mutation is being carried by Hatta, as she is not a black rat and the line is not intended to remain black. Dia herself is a perfectly lovely girl, with a perfectly colored coat, a charming head, fantastic temperament and very active, attention-seeking behavior. Siblings from this litter will be crossed together to try and force the mutation, if it is present, to surface.

June 2012

BVR Warlock Dowling
Russian Blue Agouti Berkshire
BVR Lucy Westenra
Russian Blue Agouti Berkshire Satin

For our Russian Blue Marked line...

Hoping to capitalize on the two best-marked babies from our 2011 Marked breeding - both of these rats are truly fantastic. Both have absolutely wonderful, floppy tucky personalities, both have great heads, big gorgeous eyes, and good size. Lucy's color is nicer and darker, and she has a Satin coat to pass on. We're hoping neither of these two are homozygous Agoutis so that I can gradually phase the Agouti out of this line to pure Russian Blue.

Pedigree

Expecting: Russian Blue, Russian Blue Agouti, Dove and Russian Cinnamon in Standard and Satin Coats, chance of Dumbo ears possible. Markings.

August 2012

BVR Gianfar
Russian Cinnamon Satin
BVR Chani
Mink Self

For our Russian Cinnamon line...

Gianfar is a very muscular, solid Satin boy out of a strong pedigree. Chani is very young right now, but is displaying remarkable temperament, very large eyes, and a nice, rich color and we hope her development will continue positively as she grows.

August 2012

BVR Liet-Kynes
Agouti Self
BVR Siona
Black Self

For our Black Satin line...

Finally, a major step in repairing our Black Satin line!

Both Siona and Liet are amazing as babies, and are just what the doctor ordered to put my Black Satin line back on track! I can't wait to see these two beauties grow and mature, because even as babies both have great big ears, wonderful heads, great color, big eyes, and were the biggest, most well-built babies in their litter. There will be limited, if any, placement of Black and Agoutis outside the rattery, but we are expecting other colors, which will be pet-placed.

Pedigree

Expecting: Black, Agouti, Russian Blue, Russian Blue Agouti, Cinnamon, Mink, Russian Cinnamon and Dove all possible. Satin coats possible but not expected. Dumbo ears possible but not expected.

A note on my breeding plans...

Some of these plans are my thoughts at the time. They are not concrete and laid in stone until the day I put the doe with the buck. 90% of my breedings are based on the doe. I believe that the doe is more than 50% of the quality of the baby, not only does she contribute half the genetics, but all of the upbringing and teaching.

I try to breed my does fairly late, from 8-10 months, to be sure they are what I want to breed, that they have developed well and stayed healthy. The next step is to find a buck who will compliment her strengths and try and correct her weaknesses. The doe is the most concrete of the plans you see above. Unless she suffers a serious decline in health or a snag in her pedigree, I'm fairly confident to be breeding her. The buck I'll be using, however, has a much higher chance of changing, depending on development, temperamental/hormonal changes, and the development of siblings in addition to health and pedigree.

A doe has a limited breeding life. A buck can breed until the day he dies. It's almost always possible to set a buck aside for later use; not so much the doe.
