Should You Get Rats?

Rats are easily the best of the available rodent pets for most people. They have many advantages over more publically acceptable pets, such as hamsters, guinea pigs, and gerbils, though poor press and the "vermin" reputation often keep them from being as popular as they should be! Additionally, because rats are so docile, they are the most popular rodent bred for reptile food, and thus suffer from overbreeding and the ill-care that many animals considered "livestock" and not "pets" recieve.

Rats are advantageous in that they:

  • Can and should be kept in same-sex social groups. Male of almost any other rodent species will fight and kill one another, while male rats enjoy the company of other rats
  • Are extremely smart, and can be taught many tricks, including answering to their names, standing on hind legs, and more complex behaviors such as agility!
  • When properly socialized, they are extremely friendly and loving, and do not bite
  • They are clean animals who frequently groom themselves and others, can be litter-box trained, and have a low odor.
  • Come in a rainbow of varieties in coat type, color and ear set, so that almost anyone can find a rat they find really attractive
  • Are readily available from quality breeders in most parts of the country
  • Are a very good pet for children old enough to handle them with care and respect
  • Take up very little space in one's home
  • Do not have allergens in their dander, and so are often easier on people with allergies to pet hair.
  • Are full of personality and really enjoy interacting with people!
  • In order to reap the full benefits of rats' naturally docile and outgoing natures, of course, it is best to obtain quality animals from an ethical breeder or rescue, to ensure they are well-socialized as babies and have been given plenty of mental stimulation. Rats found in pet stores can of course be wonderful pets, but it usually takes much more work to achieve.

Rats are disadvantageous in that they:

  • Can be skittish, nervous, and nippy if not properly socialized
  • Have weak respiratory systems and often get mammary tumors
  • Can be expensive to care for properly
  • Have a short lifespan that averages 18-30 months
  • Require time, attention and stimulation daily from their owners, as opposed to many other rodents which are happier left to their own devices
  • Will chew anything within reach, and will pull anything within six inches of their cage into it and destroy it
  • Their bedding and urine often cause allergic reaction
  • Can give a very severe bite if not socialized, or if frightned or hurt
  • No one should purchase pet rats who does not have the time to handle them on a daily basis, and who doesn't have the resources to properly care for them. However, those who do find rooms in their hearts and homes for these wonderful pets will seldom be disappointed. There are few pets available who will bring more joy and laughter to one's life, while remaining in such a small, clean package!
